On our motorhome itinerary through the Haute-Vienne, we stopped off at Le Dorat, a charming village nestled on the borders of Berry, Poitou and Limousin. Perched at an altitude of 224 meters, this small town of character seduced us with its peaceful atmosphere, rich historical past and the quality of its welcome for motorhome owners.
From the campsite, it's a five-minute walk to the town center. On Saturday mornings, we strolled through the weekly market before visiting a number of attractive craft and antique stores. On the outskirts, there's a small supermarket for easy shopping.
We had lunch at "La Terrasse des Îles", a restaurant with a unique atmosphere, serving excellent Madagascan cuisine in a setting combining grocery stores, antiques and conviviality.
A little further on, we met a passionate potter who also offers courses for adults and children. It's a great opportunity to take home a beautiful piece of handmade pottery or to learn a local skill.
Le Dorat is classified as a "Site Patrimonial Remarquable" and a "Petite cité de caractère", and this is no coincidence. Its 11th-century Romanesque collegiate church, listed as a historic monument, impresses with its volumes and stones steeped in history. It houses the relics of Saint Israël and Saint Théobald, celebrated every seven years during the "Ostentions".
Another medieval curiosity is the Porte Bergère, a vestige of the town's ancient fortifications. And for nature lovers, several hiking trails start right outside the campsite. The ideal way to get away from it all in the Limousin countryside.
We set down our wheels on the small campsite in my village of Le Doratmanaged by CAMPING-CAR PARK. Twenty or so spacious grass pitches, a connected terminal, a vending machine at the entrance, and even a wifi hotspot: everything has been thought out for a comfortable stay. The well-maintained sanitary facilities are accessible from April to November with the Digital Pass. And when it comes to services: drainage, water, electricity, garbage cans... it's all there.
The icing on the cake is the breathtaking view of the village and the majestic collegiate church of Saint-Pierre-Es-Liens. The campsite is incredibly quiet, ideal for a restful night's sleep.
We left Le Dorat enthralled by the welcome, calm and cultural richness of this village. For motorhome owners in search of authenticity, nature and heritage, it's an essential stopover. We'll definitely be back!
